NICE CITY To receive a wellcome from Bolivia

Santa Cruz de la Sierra

We will pick you up from the airport and drive you to your hotel in Santa Cruz de la sierra. (Free day)

Santa Cruz de la Sierra is the largest city in Bolivia and capital of the Bolivian tropical low lands, region bordering with Brazil and Paraguay, with tropical climate and very friendly and happy people. The city is located between the green Amazonian jungle and the savanna’s; it is a cosmopolitan and progressive city that offers all the services of a modern city.

The most important attractions around this city are: Samaipata, the National Park Amboro, Concepcion, San Javier, San Ignacio and others

Today, we will pick you up after your breakfast and drive you to Samaipata (around 4 hrs driving). In the afternoon, you will visit the pre-Inca ruins of El Fuerte, which is on the UNESCO World Heritage list since 1998. The heart of El Fuerte is the largest carved rock in the world with a size of 220 x 60 m, which mainly served in rituals. (B, L)

Take a peek inside our Wonderworld

Samaipata

Samaipata is a wonderful, quiet village, in a beautiful setting in the mountains, at a distance of 120 km from Santa Cruz, where the international Viru Viru airport is situated.

Nestling in the foothills of the Andes at an altitude of about 1,650 m, at the border of the N.P. Amboró, it has a delightful climate all year round. The surroundings are green and mountainous. The Incas that lived here gave it the name of Samaipata. The meaning of this Quechua-word is: ‘rest-in-the-height’.

On account of the pleasant climate, the splendid environment and the various possibilities and places of interest, as well as the excellent accommodation available, Samaipata has become a highlight for many travellers. This all makes it an ideal spot to start your travel in Bolivia or to take a rest after your long flight.

The cloud forest of N.P. Amboró is mysterious, with hanging mosses, bromeliads and ancient giant fern trees that grow up to 12 m high. Today you can go see the fern trees or look for the condor, the king of the Andean sky. Then we will come back to Santa Cruz. (B, L)

Visiting Sucre

Transfer hotel – airport. Flight to Sucre. In Sucre you will be picked up from the airport and driven to your hotel.
Take notice that Sucre is located 2800 meters above sea level.

In the afternoon, we will visit the church, convent and will enjoy the beautiful view of the city from ¨La Recoleta¨. We will also visit the Indigenous Art Museum (ASUR) where you can see the textiles of two different cultures: Tarabuco and Jalq’a. Afterwards a visit to the “Casa de la Libertad” and the main square of Sucre. Hotel in Sucre. (B)

Enjoy a guided day tour of the pretty city of Sucre.

We will go by car to the Castle of La Glorieta, appr. 5 km out of town. La Glorieta is a mansion that was built in European style during the Republican time for an aristocratic family.

Instead of visiting La Glorieta, we can also visit the Cretaceous Park if you prefer, where you can see one of the largest collections of dinosaur footprints in the world.

Then we will return to the city and visit Sucre’s general Cemetery where many important persons from Bolivia’s past were buried. Students like to choose this quiet place to sit down studying here at the cemetery. (B, L)

We will end the tour with a visit to the Simón Bolívar Park. In this park you will recognize French influences; there is a replica of the Eiffel Tower to be seen and also of the Arch of Triumph.  The rest of the day will be free.

After your breakfast, we will transfer you to the fascinating mining city of Potosí for a taste of ‘real Bolivia’. The ride takes about 3 hrs. Potosí is the highest city in the world. You may have to gasp for breath and it’s recommended to take it easy and drink some (coca)tea.

In the afternoon, you will visit La Casa de la Moneda, probably the best museum of Bolivia or to the Santa Teresa Monastery. (B, L)

Mining city

Potosi

Potosí is a very special city; located at an altitude of 4,100 m it is one of the highest cities in the world and it is also one of the three colonial cities of Bolivia.

Potosí was during her heyday the largest and richest city in South America and the main supplier of silver at the Spanish court. You can do a tour to the Cerro Rico mines to see the miners at work.

Although the city has a sad image for many because of its past, Potosí has a very nice centre with beautiful buildings including churches, monasteries and various museums. During a city tour you can see a lot of them.

Today, you will visit the miner’s market where you can buy some gifts like coca leaves, dynamite and pure alcohol for the miners (not included).
It is tradition to bring the miners gifts because you are entering their working area and the miners need those gifts because of their low wages.By car you will go to one of the many entrances of the famous silver mine. You will see miners at work, there is a miners-made museum and you will visit El Tío, the God of the underworld, where the miners offer to Pacha Mama, Mother Earth.

After the lunch, you will travel to Tupiza (arond 4 hrs) The area of Tupiza is characterized by a desert-like landscape with huge cacti and jagged multi coloured rock formations, it breathes the atmosphere of the Wild West. At the beginning of 1900 the two outlawed bandits Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid descended here. (B, L)

pueblito encantado – charming town

Tupiza

The quiet town of Tupiza is located in the Potosí district of southern Bolivia. The surrounding area is characterized by a desert landscape with huge cacti and erratic eroded coloured rock formations.

Tupiza and her surroundings breathe the atmosphere of the Wild West.

Beginning 1900, the two outlawed bandits Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid descended here.

Today you will visit Quebrada de Palala, a spectacular jagged rock formation, formed over many years by intense erosion of the mountainside. After this you will head on to El Sillar where you will have a few minutes to get out and enjoy this dramatic landscape before we continue through Nazarenito, a small gold mining community. Then we will go to visit Ciudad del Encanto, where you will see impressive rock formations. After that, you will arrive to San Pablo de Lípez (4250m). Then you will go to San Antonio de Lípez and finally to Quetena, where you will spend your first night in a Basic Accommodation. (B, L, D)

After breakfast, you will visit your first lagoon, Laguna Kollpa. Here large amounts of raw material are extracted for making soap. If you want, you can get out and take a few photographs before continuing through Salar de Chaiviri to arrive at the hot springs in time for a short swimming and some lunch. Your next stop after lunch will be the Laguna Verde (4250 m.a.s.l.), which presents an emerald green coloration due to arsenic and magnesium content in its waters. It is located at the feet of Volcano Licancabur (5868m), which represents the border between Chile and Bolivia. Desierto de Dalí (110 km2) is our next stop, a place with mountains of surrealist colors, reminiscent of the photos of Salvador Dalí and rock formations of petrified lava. Then, we will cross the hots springs once more to go to “Sol de Mañana” Geysers (5000m above sea level). Then we will spend around 1 hour in Laguna Colorada and finally we will travel to Villamar. (B, L, D)

After the breakfast, we will start visiting Valle de Rocas, where you will see many rocks formations like Copa del Mundo and El Camello. Then we will go to Italia Perdida, where you will have some time to walk around the rocks. After that, we will go to Laguna Catal or Laguna Negra. Next is Cañón de la Anaconda which is a canyon where the Anaconda river runs. SALT ACCOMMODATION (B, L, D)

Today we will cross the immense Salar de Uyuni (3650 m.a.s.l.) early in the morning to see the Sunrise in the Uyuni Salt Flat. With 12,000 km2, the Salar de Uyuni is the largest salt plain in the world, stretching away in all directions as far as the eye can see. From here you can see volcano Tunupa impressively overhanging. The salt flats are made up of 11 separate layers with a thickness that ranges from 2 to 10m. The depth of salt is 120 meters and with that it is the biggest reserve of minerals such as lithium, magnesium, potassium, nitrogen, phosphorus and borax in the world. It has 14 small islands, the most important is the Incahuasi Island. Around the island, you can see Ojos de Agua, these are springs which act as pores for the salt flats. Leaving the salt bed, we will visit Colchani, the village where the salt is processed. Here there are various salt souvenirs and alpaca or llama wool clothes. Finally, we will go to see Cementerio de Trenes, where you will see a lof of ancient trains.

Today you will travel to La Paz via a short flight. Upon arrival in the city you will be transferred to your hotel. Free time (B)

la ciudad maravilla – the wonder city

La Paz

La Paz is the government city of Bolivia. Often the city is wrongly labeled as the capital of Bolivia, but that is Sucre. La Paz is located on the altiplano, the Andes plateau, at an altitude of 3,600 m and lies in a bowl. The buildings extend to the city of El Alto, with the snowy mountain top of Illimani in the background.

In addition to a ride by trufi, taxi or bus, you can also take the cable car to a number of points in the city or to El Alto, from where you have a magnificent view over the metropolis.

The city is an important administrative centre where ministries, embassies but also banks have their (main) offices. The image of the city is lively and varied, you see for example hasty people with suitcases and expensive suits and Aymara women who have small merchandise stalls.

You can enjoy a few days in La Paz, there are museums, good restaurants, nightlife, the famous witches market, etc.

Pick up from your hotel to visit the famous Witches Market, the colonial Church of San Francisco and crafts shops on Sagarnaga Street. The tour continues to the Murillo Square, where the Metropolitan Cathedral, the Government Palace and Parliament buildings are located. Then visit the famous Jaen Street a colonial neighborhood, where the most interesting museums in the city are clustered together, from there we will go to the replica of the Semi-subterranean temple of Tiwanaku Culture. A change of scenery, the tour continues to the residential areas of Obrajes, Calacoto and Florida. The tour ends with a visit to the spectacular Valley of the Moon. (B, L)

An early morning start in order to be transferred to the airport in time for your international flight home. (B)
