ITINERARY

Upon arrival, be greeted at the airport and taken to your hotel in the lovely area of Providencia. Enjoy a walking tour in the afternoon.

Fly to Calama and be transferred to your hotel in San Pedro. Free afternoon. (B)

TATIO GEYSER: We travel north towards the geysers. On the way back we enjoy vast and varied landscapes, we also witness the ancient activities of the inhabitants of the plateau, the sulfur mining, the collection of the Llareta and the raising of llamas.  Excellent excursion to observe the variety of the altiplanic fauna.

MOON VALLEY: Gets its name thanks to the evaporite (salt) that covers it, and gives it a lunar appearance. Its landscapes make us travel to other geological times; The bare earth demonstrates the planet’s enormous forces in a dramatic gesture of the elements. (B, L)

Be picked up from your hotel and taken to the border. You will cross into Bolivia, passing through the stunning Eduardo Avaroa National Park, which is home to Laguna Colorada, hot springs of Polques, Geyser Sol de Mañana, Verde and the Dali Desert.

We continue our expedition going through Siloli desert, beautiful mountains colored by the sulfur that covers great extensions. We continue to discover three beautiful lakes: La Honda, Chiarkota, Hedionda and Cañapa. Here we’ll have an outdoors lunch near the flamingos. We continue to travel along huge valleys of volcanic rock that still seem to flow from the volcanoes. From our high viewpoint we spot the Chiguana salt flat that begins to dominate the landscape. Then, we go near Colchane at the edge of the Salt Flat and we spend the night at an exotic Salt Hotel.. (B, L, D)

We will start the tours early to see the sunrise in the Uyuni salt flat, we cross its vast extension to arrive at the island Incahuasi populated by numerous cardón cacti. We walk up a path to a beautiful panoramic viewpoint of the surrounding salt flat. We’ll have lunch here. We continue exploring the salt flat towards the village of Coqueza. From here we start a walk up to a lookout at the edge of the extinct crater of the Tunupa volcano where we have an incredible view of the Uyuni Salt Flat. We go down to visit caves inhabited by ancient mummies. Then the sunset in salt flat (B, L, D)

After your breakfast, you will travel to Tupiza (around 4 hrs). The area of Tupiza is characterized by a desert-like landscape with huge cacti and jagged multi coloured rock formations, it breathes the atmosphere of the Wild West. At the beginning of 1900 the two outlawed bandits Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid descended here. (B, L)

Tupiza

The quiet town of Tupiza is located in the Potosí district of southern Bolivia. The surrounding area is characterized by a desert landscape with huge cacti and erratic eroded coloured rock formations.

Tupiza and her surroundings breathe the atmosphere of the Wild West.

Beginning 1900, the two outlawed bandits Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid descended here.

Early start to head to the Argentine border. You will cross by foot and meet your Argentine guide there. We will visit the impressive El Hornocal, known as the hill of 14 colors at 4300 meters, before spending the night in Tilcara. (B,L)

We visit the pre-Inca ruins of the Pucará de Tilcara, the archaeological museum and the artisan shops. Then we leave for the town of Purmamarca, have lunch in the town and go to Salinas Grandes to visit the salt flat and return to Purmamarca (B, L).

PURMAMARCA

The name of the town can be interpreted as the combination of Aymara language words purma (desert) and marca (city), though desert in that language can refer to uncivilised or not touched by human hand, thus the name is often interpreted as Town of the virgin land.

The city’s attraction include the aforementioned Cerro de los Siete Colores and the town handicraft market. It also serves as a starting point for treks such as the Paseo de los Colorados and Purmamarca River, and tours to Salinas Grandes, the Huachichocana archaeological site and the Laguna de Guayatayoc with its pink flamencos and wild geese.

Departure from Purmamarca towards Jujuy and we take the cornice road (subtropical jungle) to enter Salta, once there we will stop for lunch on the outskirts and we will tour the city and surroundings visiting the historic center. (B, L)

Drive through the stunning Calchaqui Valleys to the picturesque town of Cafayate. This is the main wine producing area in the northwest and as such we’ve arranged two tastings today. (B, L)

Visiting Salta

The historic city of Salta, where striking architecture and leafy plazas easily justify a stay for a day or two.

During excursions from this charming city, you will climb past giant cactus, grazing vicuña, sculpted rocks and mountains striped red, amber, coffee and ochre, reaching dazzling salt flats and impossibly tiny settlements at nearly 4,000 metres above sea level.

Fly to Buenos Aires today and have the evening to yourselves. After traversing the northwest we recommend a relaxing night enjoying steak, empanadas, pasta, or any of the cuisine Argentina is famous for along with a bottle of wine. (B)

Enjoy a tour of the city which will have you taking in some of the city’s most famous historical landmarks. (B)

Be taken to the airport in time for your overnight flight home. (B)
